About the role

As Senior Mechanical Engineer at Steel CleanUp you are the technical backbone of our engineering team. You combine deep technical expertise with a strong sense of quality, risk and collaboration. You work independently on complex mechanical challenges, safeguard the technical integrity of our installations and act as the go-to expert for colleagues, suppliers and other disciplines.

In this role you operate at the intersection of innovation, design, realisation and continuous improvement. You drive quality and consistency in the engineering process and actively contribute to the further development of our technology. You report at project level: to the Project Engineer or the Project Engineering Lead.

We are looking for a technically strong engineer with demonstrable seniority who can contribute from innovation through to realisation: someone who not only excels technically, but also shows leadership, brings others along and takes ownership.

Technical design & engineering

  • Designing and detailing complex mechanical systems and components in Inventor, with an eye for manufacturability, maintainability and safety.
  • Drawing up, monitoring and validating technical specifications, drawings and bills of materials in line with applicable standards and internal guidelines.
  • Performing and reviewing technical calculations in the fields of (thermo)dynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Reviewing engineering documentation from colleagues and external parties; identifying technical risks and proposing improvements.
  • Safeguarding technical consistency and quality across the full breadth of the mechanical design.

Responsibilities & ownership

  • Taking ultimate responsibility for the technical quality of mechanical sub-designs within a project or installation component.
  • Proactively identifying technical risks, deviations and bottlenecks; translating these into concrete actions and following them through to resolution.
  • Defining and monitoring technical frameworks, documenting design decisions and embedding them in the engineering process.
  • Acting as the technical point of contact for internal stakeholders (process engineers, project managers, R&D) in the mechanical domain.
  • Actively contributing to knowledge building within the team: coaching less experienced engineers and sharing best practices.

Suppliers & inspection

  • Selecting and technically assessing suppliers and subcontractors; preparing purchasing documentation and technical requirement specifications.
  • Managing external parties on mechanical matters: monitoring deliverables, quality and timely delivery.
  • Performing and supervising visual inspections and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) at suppliers and on site, with final responsibility for acceptance.

Plant & project involvement

  • Being present regularly at the plant to spot issues early, proactively think along about improvements and support others.
  • Contributing to planning, scoping and risk analyses for mechanical work packages within larger projects.
  • Thinking along about the technological development of our core systems and helping translate innovation into robust, scalable designs.

Experience & background

  • At least a bachelor's level of working and thinking in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience as a mechanical engineer in an industrial environment.
  • Demonstrable experience with 3D CAD, preferably Inventor and Vault.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant standards and regulations (including PED, ATEX), with proven application in previous projects.
  • Dutch language level B1 or B2 preferred, living in the Netherlands.
  • Experience in (waste) processing, metallurgy, the chemical industry or a comparable process environment is a strong plus.

Competencies

  • Technical depth.
  • Ownership & sense of responsibility: you safeguard quality and progress even when no one asks you to.
  • Strong communicator: you convey technical insights clearly to colleagues, suppliers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Flexibility: you deal well with uncertainty and act flexibly in a fast-changing, dynamic environment.
  • Practical mindset: you are regularly visible on the plant floor and tackle problems hands-on.
  • Proactive and solution-oriented: you spot risks early and come up with concrete proposals.
  • Good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

What we offer

  • A key role in a 'First of a Kind' industrial project with direct climate impact.
  • A challenging working environment where technical ambition and sustainability take centre stage.
  • Direct influence on the design and realisation of an innovative industrial installation.
  • A 'can do' culture: no thick layers of management, but fast decision-making.
  • A one-year contract of 32–40 hours per week with a view to a permanent position.
  • A salary in the range of €5,300 to €6,500 gross per month based on experience, supplemented with 28 holidays, pension accrual and a travel allowance of €0.23/km.
  • An innovative benefits package that fits our culture and growth.

Who we are

We are impact-driven innovators and problem solvers — ambitious dreamers who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves. A diverse, dynamic team, united by the conviction that sustainability is not just a goal, but our reason for being. We deliberately think outside the beaten track.

Steel CleanUp produces green raw materials for the steel industry. In doing so, we prevent our customers from having to extract new raw materials through an expensive and polluting mining process. A sustainable solution with impact.

Our organisation is based at our plant location in Alkmaar.
